A 10-player tennis session, from preparation to results
Let's look at a session where 5 men and 5 women share one court for a mix of men's doubles, women's doubles, and mixed doubles.
Session goals
- 20 matches in total: 5 men's doubles, 5 women's doubles, and 10 mixed doubles
- 8 matches per player
- Use the remaining time to rest or prepare for the next match
20 doubles matches provide 80 player slots in total. Shared among 10 people, that is 8 matches per person. With one court, only one match can be played in each round, so you need 20 rounds.
Check your available time first
If you allow 12 minutes per round, including play and changeovers, 20 rounds will take about 4 hours. Allow extra time for warm-ups and separate breaks. This is an example for planning your session; MatchMaker does not time matches or decide when they end.
For timed matches, agree before you start on how to handle a tie when time expires, whether to finish a point already in progress, and what scoring unit to record. The app compares the two teams' entered numbers to determine wins, draws, and losses.
Preparation steps
- Confirm attendance and enter each player's name and gender
- Set the session name and date in “Events, rosters, and backups”. For a regular group, you can save the current players as a named roster to reuse next time
- Under Auto-generate, select 1 court, 20 rounds, and “Balanced example”
- Generate the schedule, then check each player's play and rest allocation
- Save a schedule image to share with the players, and keep a separate JSON backup for the organizer
To try it out first, open “Try a larger event” below the players and select “Load balanced example: 5 men + 5 women”. This preserves your previous session and opens a separate example. The button sets 2 courts and 10 rounds, so change these to 1 court and 20 rounds after loading. With the supplied example roster and the default seed matchmaker-2026, the 1-court, 20-round result was verified to give each player 8 matches, with 0 repeated partners, a maximum playing streak of 2 matches, and a maximum wait of 3 rounds. There are 41 opponent repeats. These figures describe that example's result and are not guaranteed for other rosters, seeds, or requirements.
On the day
- Use the “Match-day view” to see the current match, the next match, and the resting players
- If scorekeeping is enabled, check both teams' scores, then select “Save as complete”
- When every match in the current round is complete, the app directs you to the next round. With two or more courts, if one court finishes first, it waits for the other courts in the same round to finish
- The progress screen shows rest by round. It does not account for the actual finish time on each court
- If you change the schedule because someone is absent, review the notice about deleting completed scores, then check match counts and waiting time again after the change
What if you use two courts?
You can play the same 20 matches over 2 courts and 10 rounds. Rest arrangements will change, however, because 8 people play and only 2 rest in each round. With this setup, it is impossible for each person to play 8 matches while limiting their maximum playing streak to 2 matches. Even if the two rests divide their playing time into three stretches, a limit of 2 matches per stretch allows only 6 matches in total.
Wrap-up
Confirm the total number of completed matches and the scores with the players, then save an image of the standings. Keep a JSON backup of the current session or all records as well, so you can make changes later. Saving an image and creating a restorable backup are separate tasks.
